Purpose of local government:
Councils have been established by state governments to look after the particular needs of a city or local community. The decision–making body of local government is usually called the city, shire or regional council. Members Citizens elect representatives who form the council. They are known as aldermen or councillors. The head of the council is the mayor or shire president. Decisions Most decisions are taken in full local government and committee meetings. The local government can make local laws to deal with issues in your community. Responsibilities Local laws usually include these issues:
Assistance to Community Organisations Local government can provide grants directly to community organisations. This is an important way for local governments to support their local communities. |
